Dr. Dominic Addison

Dom picDr Dominic Addison is a Counselling Psychologist with over 15 years experience in NHS, educational and private-practice settings. He qualified in 2001, and has a Doctorate in Psychotherapeutic and Counselling Psychology from the University of Surrey, and a MA in Psychology from Aberdeen University. He is a Chartered member of The British Psychological Society, Counselling Psychology Division, and is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council.

Dr Addison has extensive experience of working with adults, adolescents and couples upon a range of emotional and behavioural problems – anxiety and panic attacks; low mood and depression; relationship and social difficulties; and adjustment to trauma, loss or ill health. He has a particular interest in self-esteem and self-image problems, social anxiety, and interpersonal problems in family, social and work settings.

He has trained in humanistic, cognitive-behavioural, and psychodynamic therapies; for short-term, and life-long problems. After qualifying, he specialised in cognitive therapy, which he consolidated over seven years at a university hospital in South West London. He has been strongly influenced by other therapies and philosophies; in particular, Schema-Focused-Therapy, stoicism and existential psychology. Taken together, these approaches emphasise: that we should seek to change only that which is in our power to do so, and to learn to accept everything else; that is is generally the views we take of things that trouble us rather than the things in themselves; and that the good life comes from understanding and undoing negative patterns, and from identifying and pursuing the things that give our life meaning.

Over the years, Dr Addison has developed a nuanced sense of psychological therapies – which approaches work best for particular people and problems – and of the limits of psychological explanations and interventions. He has a strong record of people finding him easy to talk to, and his therapeutic approach to clear, practical and effective.
